Finals picks

JA here with the Finals' picks (and a day early at that).

So far my playoff record is a ridiculous 9 out of 11. No wonder I'm in such high demand. Definitely going to be put to the test this week as all 3 games are very tough to call.

Game 1.

Hawks v. Beezzz:

Well the Hawks beat the Beezzz 14 - 13 in their regular season matchup. Also the Hawks haven't lost since Sept. 26th and the Beezzz haven't won since that same date in their huge upset win over the Lancers that really didn't mean anything. The Hawks have only lost three times (two of those on the same day) since July and the Beezzz have only won twice (once against WFC) since July. In conclusion the Hawks are flying high right now and the Beezzz seem to have lost their stingers. Give me the Hawks to win a close one in a mild upset.

Game 2:

Raiders v. Lancers:

I'm assuming everyone is healthy for both teams in this one. If that is case it would be hard to pick against the Lancers in this one. They won when the two teams played each other during the regular season. Also The Lancers beat the Raiders and the Hounds during the regular season and even pulled out a victory over the Ruff Riders. They did lose to the Beezzz but you have to wonder if the fact that they had nothing left to play for had something to do with that. The Raiders on the other hand have only been able to beat the Hounds and "C" division teams all year. Both teams have been struggling as of late with the Lancers losing their last 4 regular season games and their "A" play in game to the All Blacks and their only win since August coming against the Bulldogs. The Raiders on the other hand lost 4 of their last 6 regular season game and then lost handily to the Buckeyes in the "A" play in game. They then beat a QBless Hounds team to go to the "B" semi finals. In the end, both these teams are cold right now so you have to take the better team to win in this one and that team is the Lancers.

Game 3:

Sun Devils v. Ruff Riders:

This should be another great "A" finals for this league which has been spoiled with numerous great finals over the last few years. I'm sure we all remember last year when the Rogues picked off the All Blacks in the dieing moments to snatch victory after it seemed like the All Blacks had it locked up. This year should be another classic. Both teams have great veteran QB's, mulitple excellent rushers and tons of talent from top to bottom on their rosters. The regular season match ups between these two teams were very one sided in favour of the Ruff Riders. That will not be case in this game. It's really hard to ignore the Ruff Riders very impressive regular season record (only 2 losses) but the Sun Devils only had 3 losses themselves. I can really see this game going either way. I really want to take the Sun Devils in the upset but I just can't bring myself to do it. Give me the Ruff Riders. .

As always I would love to hear your thoughts.

RE: Finals picks

Hey JA,

Great job all year with the picks, it?s always interesting to log on and see what the predictions are for the weekend.

In terms of the Lancers Vs. Raiders Match up, the Lancers may be cold as of late in league play, however, they have been doing great in Tournament play. In most cases they have been forced to play higher ranked teams, and have performed well.

Personally, the Lancers have grown as a "team" and have been playing much stiffer competition in tournaments than they have been facing here.

That said, the Raiders are a talented group of athletes with a QB that can stretch the field, and they have taken many of the top teams to edge this year (Riders included). So, this matchup is going to be one of those "Team" vs. "Individuals" games. I'm not saying that the Raiders are not a team, it's just that the Lancers are a true team in the sense that they play together all year, whereas the Raiders only play this one league together.

I like your pick, as I think the team experience and a more managed game will help lift the Lancers over the Raiders, but the Raiders can strike quick and often. The difference maker will be the Lancers D and their ability to match up. I?ll be arriving early to watch this one.

RE: Finals picks

Hey all. I can tell you right now that the Lancer-Raider tilt will be no contest.

Steinberg left, Steinberg right, Steinberg up the middle!!!

The OTFL's Michael Vick wins this game all by himself.

The only thing working against Jay is the beers he will drink at Rob Grey's wedding on Saturday night.

Mazel Tov Jay! You are an inspiration for all of us, Jewish and otherwise.

Go Lancers!!!!

RE: Finals picks

Hawks vs Beezzzz -3
Both these teams are pretty evenly matched coming into this C final. I'd give the edge at the QB spot to the Beezzz as Buzz has the experience against pretty stiff competition in tournaments this year. However, Buzz has struggled a bit this season and his team is second in the league in INTs thrown. Statistically, these teams are nearly identical in points for/against, though the Beezzz have had to face A competition. I like the Beezzz as the favourite in this battle. The Hawks however will need to find some sort of spark on O to knock off Buzz's crew.

Raiders vs Lancers -6.5
Is it just me or does it seem like there's more interest in this B final than the A? May have something to do with the Rogues not playing. Anyway, this game should be a great match between two very athletic teams and two talented QBs. Let's start with the Raiders - QB Lorin has brought with him many of his tournament players from the Hurricanes but oddly, have not had a lot of success in league this year. John Anthony may have said it best, great group of athletes but not really a great team. However, they have been playing some great ball to end the season and have come close to knocking off some A opponents. The Lancers on the other hand have had a rough end to the season but judging by my quality sources and the TFONT results page, the Lancers more than held their own at Nationals this year against some very stiff competition. The first time these two teams hooked up the Lancers won 12-7 - my guess is if the Lancers D can hold the Raiders to 2 scores or less, the Lancers will prevail with an OTFL title.

Sun Devils vs Ruff Riders -4.5
It has been a while since the Rogues weren't involved in an OTFL final but these two teams are definitely deserving of being in the big game. Both teams were impressive in their semi-final games and won in convincing fashion. All indications point towards a high scoring game between these two teams and it should come down to which defense can come up with a key stop late in the game. I'd give the edge to the Ruff Riders...no particular reason...but I just do. Poor analysis yes, but a strong hunch. However, a Sun Devils win definitely would not be considered a great upset. This will be a great game and that imaginary scoreboard at Eastdale will be lite-up brighter than the Sun Devils uniforms.
