Questions on Rules (Mens)

Hi all,

I would like to create an entirely dedicated area on the website for this thread and potentially dynamically update it on the home page as questions and answers are posted but until that happens I would like to create this thread so that if anyone has any questions about the rules they can ask them in this thread and get them answered and then all other league members can see the answers as well. So please let's hear your questions and get them answered.

Thanks,

Scott

RE: Questions on Rules (Mens)

Hey Scott, maybe you can add the questions that was asked about punting pass the line of scrimmage and giving yards, etc...

RE: Questions on Rules (Mens)

Good call. It was what inspired me to start the thread.

The question that was raised was:

If a player catches a pass and is downfield and punts the ball does the player that punted the ball (meaning he is "onside") have to give 5 yards? The reason for this question was because in the CFL (tackle Canadian Football rules) any player that is onside at the time of a punt can recover the ball and does not have to give 5 yards.

The answer is yes. In touch football all players whether "onside" or not must give 5 yards to the receiving team on all punts regardless of where the punt takes place. The penalty for failing to do so is 10 yards. Players on the punting team who are within 5 yards but are making an attempt to give 5 yards and do not make a play on the ball will not be penalized for "no yards"

RE: Questions on Rules (Mens)

Hi,

Question about the centre and the rusher and the rules regarding when the centre is called for a penalty for blocking the rusher.

Thanks!

RE: Questions on Rules (Mens)

Essentially anytime the centre obstructs the rusher from getting the QB in anyway the Centre will be called for obstruction. The main issue with this rule occurs when the QB rolls immediate after the snap. In this situation it is the centre's (and all other players on the offence) responsibility to avoid the rusher and allow him a clear path to the qb. I know there have been numerous times where I have heard the centre say but I just stayed still or I just ran straight up the field. A centre can still be called for obstruction in this situation if he is impeding the rusher's direct path to the qb. Hope this helps.

Thanks,

Scott

RE: Questions on Rules (Mens)

Thanks Scott,

Just for a clarification on what you said. Sometimes I have seen centres after they snap the ball just stay where they started and not move until the rusher goes by, creating a barrier for the rusher to avoid, thus making it a longer run to the QB. Would this be a penalty on the centre?

IF it isn't it should be. The centre knows what they are doing, and the QB knows that and can adjust their position behind where the centre is stopped.

Thoughts?

RE: Questions on Rules (Mens)

If the rusher lines up outside of 5 yards to either side of the bag he also waives his right of clear path to the QB.

RE: Questions on Rules (Mens)

Yes that should be a penalty on the Centre. Now if the QB is not rolling away from the side the rusher lined up on and the rusher lines up at least a yard outside the centre's foot (as per the rule to gain rushing priviledges) then the Centre standing still should not cause any obstrusction. If the QB does roll away from the rusher though then the onus is on the centre to completely get out of the way (for lack of a more graceful phrasing) of the rusher and therefore cannot simply stand in one spot. I think what you may be noticing when you say the centre just stands there until the rusher goes by is the situation where the centre wants to slant the same direction as where the rusher lines up and therefore needs to wait until the rusher passes before running his slant.

to the other point that was raised that is a great point. In order to gain rushing priviledges a player must be 5 yards back from the line of scrimmage and must be at least 1 yard and no more than 5 yards from the outside of the centre's foot. The defence does not need to announce who their rusher(s) is/are and can have as many rushers as they wish. If other defensive players wish to cross the line of scrimmage they must either be at least 5 yards off the line of scrimmage at the snap or must wait until a player that is 5 yards off the line of scrimmage crosses the line of scrimmage first. (in other words if you want to rush at a Half back you can't line up one yard back and go in at the snap). keep the questions coming I (or a member of the exec) will try to answer them as quickly as possible.

Thanks,

Scott

RE: Questions on Rules (Mens)

Regarding the centre rules the defence must give 3 yards over the centre. All other receivers the defence only has to give 1 yard.
