Week 2 Review

The morning started off with a tough game between a very athletic All Blacks team and the new and talented Sun Devils. When veteran Quarterback Rich La Foy of the All Blacks was asked how the game was going, he grunted and stated ?this is a tough, hard, gruelling game as usual against the Sun Devils, they don?t give you much.? In the end the teams played to a draw of 18-18 demonstrating the competitiveness of the OTFL this season.

The 10:30 game at Central featured the improved Lancers with QB Jay Steinberg leading the way against the revamped Raiders. This game was a fight to the very end. The Raiders took the lead with a touchdown from Diraw Jerome in the 3rd quarter. The Raiders maintained the lead into 4th quarter but the Lancers finally got their game in rhythm and scored early in the 4th quarter to pull within one score. The silver and black dropped an end zone completion that would have sealed their victory but instead the Lancers threw together one last drive in the dying minutes of the game to score and take the game 12-7. With two plays left, the Raiders tried to work some pirated magic to no avail on this day? Congrats Lancers!

The final match up at Central had the Raiders on the back end of a double header against the Bull Dogs, a new team to the OTFL. The Raiders were too improved for the new team that put up a great fight playing iron man (no subs the entire game). While the final score was 33-6 in favour of the Raiders, the Bull Dogs showed they have a great foundation of determination and grit.

Over at Eastdale, the Hawks took on the Hounds in the early game. In a rematch of the 2008 ?B? finals the Hounds again defeated the Hawks thanks in large part to the play of their QB Justin Bird. He was able to beat the Hawks? rushers nearly at will and generate enough big plays for the Hounds? offence to take a 14 ? 7 lead late in the 4th quarter. The Hounds would add a final score during the last five plays to win that game 21 ? 7. Adam Bacan was the star of the game scoring one of the Touchdowns for the hounds and both of their converts.

The 11:30 game saw the Killer Beezzz taking on the Buckeyes. Both teams were riding high after victories last week against the Raiders and Ruff Riders respectively. The Buckeyes got touchdowns from TJ Bradimore, Wes Coke and Dan Dominico to beat the Killer Beezzz 24 ? 0. After receiving the opening kick off, the Buckeyes drove down the field and scored. They scored again when, on the Beezzz? second play from scrimmage, a high snap sailed into the Beezzz? end zone where Tim Wray touched it for a safety. The Beezzz then kicked off to the Buckeyes who returned it all the way for the score. The game was 16 ? 0 before Beezzz QB Rob ?Buzz? Bezzant had even received two snaps. The Beezzz were never able to come back and Buckeyes? QB Mike Rafuse, who did a great job spreading the ball around to all his receivers, added a second touchdown pass to put the Buckeyes up 24 ? 0. The one bright spot for the Beezzz was the play of Richie Allen who had two interceptions in the game. Mike Rafuse was awarded game MVP for his efforts.

At Donevan, in what some are calling the ?championship preview? (though I?m sure the All Blacks, Sun Devils and Buckeyes will have something to say about that) the Rogues took on the Ruff Riders. Both teams were missing some key players and in the end, Brandon Pottle?s 14 pts were not enough to beat the Ruff Riders who took this game by a score of 28 ? 22. The Rogues will be looking for their revenge when the two teams meet again during the final week of the season on Sept 26th.

The other game at Donevan hosted the Buccaneers, led by Taylor Ianarilli?s incredible 7 sack performance and Geoff Keen with two touchdowns, defeated Westney FC 32 ? 12. The father/son duo of Steven and Dave Chappelle, along with Ben Blanche added touchdowns for the Buccaneers, while Sean Dionne and Dave Chappelle both had interceptions. Scoring for Westney FC was Mike Trail and Brandon Lafrance.

The Executive would like to wish everyone a safe and enjoyable Canada Day.
Good luck to all those who are representing the OTFL in this weekend's Kingston Tournament.

We will see you all on July 11th - including the OTFL's first ever women's match-ups at Eastdale.

Yours in Football.
