Week 8 Report - Maxwell

Maxwell Heights saw lots of football and lots of tired legs in Week 8, as a combination of 4 double headers were played across 5 games. In the early morning, we saw the Untouchables try to extend their streak to 4W against their former B-Division rival in OPC. In the second game of the day, the Untouchables play again, this time in a tough matchup with the formidable Mustangs. By noon, the Mustangs are now looking to face an OTFL Dynasty in the Rogues. It was a tough week for the Rogues, as the tail-end of their double header was against ASU. Finally, OPC wasn’t finished for the day as they returned to Maxwell at 3pm to see ASU for the second time this year.

9am – Untouchables vs. OPC

Bright ‘n early at Maxwell we saw OPC trying to get some wind in their sails this season against a red-hot Untouchables team that hasn’t lost since mid-July. Gary Humber of the Untouchables intended to keep their streak rolling and as such played an excellent game on Defence, hauling in a pair of INTs and a single Sack as well. On the Offensive side for the Untouchables, the elusive Ryan Forde came down with two TDs – courtesy of Jelani Adams. Untouchables Centre Andrew Williams was also found in the end-zone for a single PAT. On the other side of the ball, Brian Santos of OPC brought in a TD of his own, dropped in by John Silva. On the Defensive end, OPC rusher Daniel Oliveira kept the Untouchables under pressure all game – while also recording 3 Sacks. Unfortunately for OPC, the pressure gave the Untouchables diamonds as they ran away with a win this game extending their streak to 4W.

Final Score: Untouchables 13 – OPC 6
Game MVP: Gary Humber

10:30am – Untouchables vs. Mustangs

Game 2 at Maxwell saw the tired Untouchables as the underdogs against a tough opponent in the Mustangs. The Mustangs had too many weapons on the Offensive end for the Untouchables to have answers for, as the Mustangs recorded 4 individual TDs. Matt Rafuse, JJ Edwards, Ian Campbell and Krys Saunders all found the end-zone this game to record a TD, and 3 of these TDs were presents from one-half of the Mustangs QB tandem Rob Pacas. Rob can do much more than just throw the ball, as he had recorded a single point on the game as well. On Defense, the Mustangs didn’t have any INTs, however Brandon Graham was able to bring the Untouchables back some yards one time with a single Sack. For the Untouchables, Nkosi Adams had himself a game on both ends of the field, bringing down an INT as well as a TD thrown by Jelani Adams. Although the Mustangs Offense seemed to be unremitting, Jermaine James notched in a Sack of his own for the Untouchables. No upsets here folks – Mustangs take this game handily.

Final Score: Mustangs 25 – Untouchables 6
Game MVP: Rob Pacas

12pm – Mustangs vs. Rogues

It’s noon, and in their second matchup of the year, the Mustangs are hungry to hand the Rogues their first loss of the season. However, everyone who isn’t new to the OTFL knows this is no easy feat. The other half of the Mustangs QB tandem, Mike Rafuse, was able to find receiver JJ Edwards to hang up 6 points on the game. Andrew Brown of the Mustangs was able to pick off a Rogue ball and record an INT for himself. Alas, the Rogues Offense marched upon the Mustangs to a tune similar to the previous game in Mustangs vs. Untouchables. Similarly, the Rogues recorded 4 individual TDs. Ryan Stephens, Joe Dublin, Shad Ross, and Andrew Brimpong all hung up 6 points, with Brandon Pottle to thank for 3 of those TDs. Paul Leckey was able to add 2 more points to the Rogue scoreboard as well through convert. The seemingly omnipresent Andrew Brimpong had quite the stat line adding 3 more points on top of his TD, as well as an INT of his own. Joining him in the INT club would be the (routinely) Brandon Pottle and Joe Dublin, who each had an INT. Alone in the Sacks column was Center Ryan Stephens, who tallied up a single Sack. Sunday, the Rogues had Mustang for lunch, and took this game easily.

Final Score: Rogues 29 – Mustangs 6
Game MVP: Brandon Pottle

1:30pm – Rogues vs. ASU

Under fortuitous chances, the ASU squad is looking to take advantage of a tired team who is on the latter half of their double-header. ASU looked to finish what the Mustangs had failed to do this week, and that is to disrupt what may be another perfect season by the Rogues. ASU QB Dave Spackman was firing on all cylinders this game, handing out 4 TD passes against a stingy Rogues Defence. Dave Z, Giorgio Mikos twice, and Kyle Shaw were all on the receiving end of these TD passes. On 4 PAT attempts, ASU had only produced 1 point at the hands of Ryan Dixon. As such, this ultimately lead to the undoing of ASU. Brandon Pottle of the rogues matched ASU QB by recording 4 TDs on the game as well. Only 2 recipients of these passes though, with Paul Leckey and Andrew Brimpong both putting up 2 TDs each. What put the game on ice here was the Rogues ability to convert, which gave them an addition 3 points. Paul Leckey added a single point on top of his 2 TDs, and Kevin Park tossed up 2 points as well. No INTs or Sacks recorded on either side of the ball this game, which seems to be a bit uncharacteristic for both teams. By a hair, the Rogues pull through their tough double-header undefeated this week.

Final Score: Rogues 27 – ASU 25
Game MVP: Paul Leckey

3pm – ASU vs. OPC

After a long day of football at Maxwell, a well-rested OPC returns from their earlier 9am game to take on a nearly victorious ASU team. This game got a little bit chippy, as former league MVP Ryan Henriques of OPC and Dave Spackman exchanged some words and a couple soft shoves. ASU receiver Frank Katradis was looking out for his QB and acted out physically (albeit rather mildly) against an OPC player. This to no surprise resulted in Frank getting ejected for the game. Although ASU only had 7 players this game, they still stuck it to OPC this week. Dave Z added 18 points to the scoreboard through TDs, 2 of which thrown by Dave Spackman, and 1 thrown by Giorgio Mikos on a halfback play. Giorgio had also added 8 points of his own, 6 of which came when receiving a pitch from a kick-off, where he displayed impressive athleticism and ran it all the way back to the crib dodging multiple OPC defenders for a 70 yard return TD. On the Defensive end, Ryan Dixon (who also converted for 2 points) was smothering the opposing QB by adding 4 Sacks for his team. Dave Z rose up like usual and pulled down an INT, the only one for ASU. For OPC, Ryan Henriques forgot about the earlier altercation and tried his best to help his team by recording a TD and a single PAT. TD thrown by QB John Silva. Andriy Nimtsiv of OPC displayed this week not to try him when he’s playing corner, as he came down with 2 INTs which were both deep plays. Daniel Oliveira took ASU back yards one time as he picked up a single Sack for the game. ASU adds 1 to their win to their column and move to 6-3 as they take this one by a marginal amount.

Final Score: ASU 29 – OPC 7
Game MVP: Ryan Dixon
